Nerdy Kid's Choice Awards
It is a truth universally held that I am raising a nerdy
child, and am proud of it. Last night was the Kid's Choice Awards on Nick and I
wondered how the results would vary from the nerdy kid perspective. So I asked
my kid his opinion and here is what I found.
(To create this list I used the results of the 2013 Kids
Choice Awards compared to my sons picks. )
Mainstream Picks VS The Nerd Picks
Favorite TV Show
Award Winner
Victorious: A show about a girl who wants to become a star. The
show has few strong adult characters, and most adults are shown to be stupid
and incompetent.
Vs.
Dr. Who: A show about a time traveling alien and his
companion that save the world and place a high value on intelligence, and all
life.
Favorite Animated Cartoon
My kid and the mainstream both love:
Sponge Bob Squarepants: No description necessary on this
one. J
Favorite TV Actor
Award Winner
Ross Lynch
VS.
Matt Smith
Favorite TV Actress
Award Winner
Selena Gomez
VS.
Karen Gillian
(Note: Billie Piper was a close second but was not on the
show in 2012.)
Favorite Book
Award Winner
The Hunger Games
VS.
Harry Potter (He has read the first three and likes them
all.)
Favorite Video Game
Award Winner
Just Dance 4
VS.
Minecraft
Favorite App
Award Winner
Temple Run
VS
Smurfs (I wouldn’t let him pick Minecraft twice.)
Favorite Movie
Award Winner
The Hunger Games
VS.
The Hobbit an Unexpected Journey
Favorite Movie Actor
Award Winner
Johnny Depp
VS.
Ian McKellen
Favorite Movie Actress
Award Winner
Kristen Stewart: As Bella Swan
VS.
Anne Hathaway : As Cat Woman
Favorite Animated Movie
Award Winner
Wreck It Ralph
VS.
Frankenweenie
Favorite Female Buttkicker
Award Winner
Kristen Stewart: As Bella Swan (Really?!?)
VS.
Anne Hathaway : As Cat Woman
Favorite Male Buttkicker
Award Winner
Dwayne Johnson
VS.
Thorin Oakenshield
Favorite Villian
Award Winner
Simon Cowell from the Voice
VS.
Daleks
Just looking at this I have to say that my nerdy kid has far
better role models.

Timeless Treasures - Steampunk Theme Fabrics
I am often asked where I find the fabric for my creations, especially the clockwork/ train theme fabric. As an avid sewer I have a several stores I shop at both brick and morter and online to find the fabric.
The thing to remember is that fabric runs on a season just like clothing and what you see now may not be available next month or next year. My rule is if I love it I buy some of it even if it is only quarter yard. (That is why my house is over flowing with fabric) If I am out shopping I take a picture of the info at the top of the bolt so that I know the designer and pattern name if I want to buy more later.
Much of my fabric is quilting quality fabric as it is a better quality and comes in a huge variety. This also means that they are cotton and run $9-$11 a yard.
Within the quilting/cotton fabric collections one of my favorite designer is Timeless Treasures. Over the past 18 months they have had several patterns that have a steampunk aesthetic. Check thier website for stores near you that sell the fabric, if you are going to buy a larger quantity your local quilt store might give you a discount that online stores don't have.
My favorite designs by Timeless Treasure include:
